Autumn Maple II

K. Kauffman, Autumn Maple II, 16”x20”, ink drawing

Autumn Maple II is a contrast in random movement and pattern. Although the tree seems to blow in the wind, if the viewer looks closely, repetitious designs emerge. The curving trunk shows stripes that angle upward. The green grass background features a variety of motifs. The blue-gray sky above seems to be comprised of tiny eyes that stare back at the viewer.

I find nature is filled with designs that intrigue me. In Autumn Maple II, I draw in ink what I see in forested surroundings.

The myriad of leaves above form repeated shapes that invite my eye to gaze while I perceive faces, a dragon, a frog. I enjoy these relaxing fanciful imaginings.

The geometric duplications in these blue Bristlecone Pine trees (the oldest living trees on earth, up to 5000 years old) cones above reveal the brilliant geometry that nature produces. This is my inspiration for the repetitive patterns I create in my ink drawings of trees.

In my ink drawing, Autumn Maple II, I compare the trunk, grass and sky designs with the      red leaves swirling in the fall breezes. Fall is a time of profound change. Autumn Maple II depicts the movement and contrast inherent in transformation while an underlying geometry provides ballast to life’s churning energies.

Autumn Changes II will be exhibited at the art fair, Art Miami Context at the Walter Wickiser Gallery booth, December 3-8, 2024. See walterwickisergallery.com.
